"Advice to a Son"
Advice to a Son Analysis
This piece was written by Hemingway in the Modern Period (1915-1940). This was a time when writers embraced and took advantage of the new spirit of the times. This is portrayed in Hemingway's "Advice to a Son" through Hemingway's blunt, get to the point style of writing.
In the poem, Hemingway is just spewing advice verse after verse. It's reflective of his life experiences and portrays all the hardships he's gone through personally. Reading the poem, you realize that he's literally telling you to not to do what he did. This is where the borderline depressing tone gets established because someone who has lived their life feeling unsatisfied at the end is as sad a story can get. It's quite ironic since he's famous and we assume that when your famous and wealthy, life should be a breeze. However, he even regrets enlisting as well as writing for a magazine, things that most would consider to be awesome. However, as seen in the poem, Hemingway reminds his readers that real satisfaction of life is achieved from a clean and wholesome life.
