"I Like Canadians"

"I Like Canadians" Analysis

This isn't Hemingway? It's more than ten verses!! "I Like Canadians" is an appreciative piece of Canadians by Hemingway. This particular poem doesn't follow his normal trend of a poem of few words. Hemingway had lots to say about our fellow Canadians.

In this poem, Hemingway is appreciating the average life of a Canadian in contrast to the life of Americans. He appreciates and praises the subtle life they lead. They are home to eat for supper and say "Thank You" when you tip 25 cents.  He states few Canadians are rich and they buy more horses than cars. Also, no Canadian works on Sunday. These are the reasons why Hemingway liked the Canadian lifestyle. They were all about living in his eyes.

If you look at Hemingway's life, he was remarried multiple times and had children with two of his wives. Just based on that Hemingway sounds like he doesn't have his life in check. He was constantly struggling to get settled. This is why I feel that the reason he really likes Canadians isn't just that they are super nice or value their obligations. It's because the Canadian lifestyle represents what he wants in life. He wishes that Americans were more like them, more chilled out and appreciative of life.
